Conversion of a Curtilage Listed Railway Goods Shed, Northumberland
A conversion of a curtilage listed, railway goods shed in the Northumberland National Park, to a single dwelling, for a private client.
The conversion required both planning and listed building consent and due the historic importance of the building we had to work solely with the building’s existing window and door openings.
The design utilises the light from large openings, on both gables, which were originally used to allow trains to drive through the building, to create a large, open plan living space with rooflights over.
The first floor accommodation is confined to one half of the plan, to retain the double height living space, and is accessed by a walkway, that looks over the open plan space below. Roof windows provide light to the first floor bedrooms and bathrooms and light borrowed from the open plan living space is used to supplement the only two windows which are on the west elevation.
